Flame The Amazing Border Collie

Miles

I got Miles when he was 7 months old off of Craigslist. I did get him from his breeder that had gotten him back from a family that had bought him when he was 6-8 weeks old and had only kept him for a few months when they called and said that they could not keep him anymore because their other dog was getting agressive.
When Miles breeder got him back he was terrified of EVERYTHING and his eye was crooked. His breeder took him to a vet that told her it was due to massive head trama. So now I ask you what kind of monster could hit a 25lbs. dog so hard and his eye would have permanent damage like this?
After Miles came home with us the extent of his trama became more and more aware. He was terrified of strangers, people yelling, cars, bikes, sudden movement, ect. He also did this really cute thing whenever he thought he was in trouble or when you called him. When he came to you he would fold in on himself and wiggle his butt, it was the cutest thing. The action was cute but the reason behind the action was just sad. He would do it so that you would hit him on the butt as apposed to hitting him in the face...and yet things get worse than that...the scariest of all was one fear I discovered without even trying... I was looking for something under my bed(can't remember what) and in the process I had to pull out my baseball bat. The bat had never even left the floor but as soon as Miles saw it he went running from the room, out the back door and hid under the back pourch. It took me 45 mins to finally get him to come out.
A month after Miles had been living with us a strange lump had formed on the right side of his face. At first it felt like a callus over this lower jaw but in only five days it grew to the size of a soft ball. We took him to the vet who then dicided it would be best to do a surgery. And so Miles went into surgery on January 12, 2009.
After surgery we had to wait for the results, and the results were not good. Miles was diagnosed with Fibrocarcinoma. Fibrocarcinoma is a cancer that grows quickly but spreads slowly...due to the placement of Miles tumor another surgery was out of the question. As it was, the first surgery was very invasive. The vet had to go around the jaw bone, around the eye and back behind the ear. And the likely hood that the tumor would come back was over 90%...They gave him 3-6 months to live.
The months that past were good. We still went to our obedience and 4H classes. He was happy and you know what? He wasn't affraid anymore. He started going up to new people, he stopped running away...
On July 17, 2009 Miles tumor started protruding out of his mouth and there was more blood than saliva in his mouth...we lost Miles that day...we took him to the vet and they gave us two options. The first one was to intubate him, get him rehydrated, than get out as much of the tumor as possible but we would only be buying time...a month at most, a week at the least...and second, to put him down and let him go. How could I choose the first option and put him though all of that...I saw how much it drained him with the first surgery...how could I put him through that again? The answer was easy: I couldn't. It would have been selfish of me. So...I let him go.
Miles tought me something though. That no matter how bad it gets life keeps going. Miles tought me that the past doesn't matter...Conquer your fears. Play the hand your delt to the fullest because you never know which card you'll be given...
